Daventry District Council - Customer Case Study

Daventry District Council, part of the Northamptonshire Waste Partnership, faced rising service demand from population growth and tough landfill-reduction targets that required rationalising domestic waste collection routes. To address this, the council worked with Ordnance Survey and partners (using Integrated Skills’ RouteSmart software) and relied on Ordnance Survey’s OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer with Road Routing Information to model the road network and plan compliant, efficient routes.

Using Ordnance Survey’s OS MasterMap ITN and RRI data integrated into RouteSmart, the partnership optimised routes accounting for turn delays, restrictions and workload balancing. The Ordnance Survey-enabled solution delivered significant savings—£125,000 a year for Daventry since 2006, an extra £200,000 a year from moving to a four‑day collection week, a 12% cut in diesel costs, 14% more spare capacity, reduced mileage and carbon footprint—and contributed to total reported savings of £575,000.
