Cornwall Council - Customer Case Study

Cornwall Council needed to meet statutory duties as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act and as a Lead Local Flood Authority to assess flood risk, produce flood hazard maps and share clear information with the public. To do this it combined Environment Agency flood datasets and local information with geographic data and mapping products from Ordnance Survey (including OS MasterMap/OS VectorMap and 1:10k–1:50k raster products).

Ordnance Survey supplied the base geographic data used to create detailed 1-in-1,000-year tidal and fluvial flood maps that show flood zone boundaries, defences, evacuation routes, locations of vulnerable people and key infrastructure. These maps, available in the office and on laptops, have improved the speed and efficiency of planning and incident response, supported the Council’s statutory mapping and information-sharing duties, and enhanced community safety by enabling timelier briefings and reactions during flooding.
