A Ordnance Survey Case Study
City of London faced the daily challenge of planning highway maintenance in a tiny, densely populated financial district where commuter numbers swell to roughly 400,000, with about 400 road closures and over 3,000 utility excavations each year. OS provided the mapping data through the Public Sector Mapping Agreement, using OS MasterMap Topography Layer and OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network Layer to deliver the sub‑metre accuracy needed to plan works precisely and avoid major disruption.
OS’s solution integrated Microsoft Project schedules with automated spatial layers (works extent and impact area) to visualise planned maintenance on detailed maps with a time slider, letting teams spot and resolve conflicts before they occur. The result: quicker, simpler scheduling; avoided conflicts and predicted impacts; cancelled unnecessary resurfacing where utilities were due—saving money; better inter‑team cooperation; faster onboarding; and reduced commuter disruption and economic impact for the City of London. OS’s mapping data underpinned all of these measurable improvements.
