A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Cardiff Council needed to improve its online mapping portal so residents could find local services and realistic travel routes: the previous system returned “as the crow flies” distances that ignored barriers like railways and rivers. Working with Ordnance Survey, Cardiff adopted OS MasterMap® data — notably the OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer — alongside other Ordnance Survey products to underpin its “my house” routing and distance functionality.
Ordnance Survey supplied the ITN Layer (via the PSMA) which, used with Ordnance Survey’s topographic and raster datasets and a customised RouteFinder Server, delivers route-based distances and directions that reflect Cardiff’s actual transport network. The result is more reliable routing for residents, fewer public enquiries to the Council, easier public decision-making about access to services, and faster map maintenance through the PSMA online update service.
