A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Cardiff Council faced lengthy, resource-heavy district retail surveys and community facility audits that previously required officers to log each outlet with paper maps and pencils, sometimes taking up to a fortnight. To speed up this work and reduce field time, Cardiff Council adopted Ordnance Survey data products—notably Points of Interest and the OS MasterMap Topography Layer—to supplement and pre-populate survey information.
Using Ordnance Survey’s Points of Interest cross-referenced with OS MasterMap, council staff create polygon layers for different community and commercial uses, allowing rapid identification of service concentrations and gaps. The result is much faster data capture—surveys now take days rather than weeks—staff spend more time validating and analysing change, and Cardiff Council can more quickly target urban regeneration and high‑street diversification.
