A Ordnance Survey Case Study
Cambridgeshire County Council, responsible for children-in-need social work across about 3,000 km2 and a population of over 622,000, was facing inefficiencies from long travel times, overlapping office catchments and reduced time for direct family work. The council turned to Ordnance Survey (OS) digital mapping and RouteFinder tools to analyse routes, catchments and travel patterns to improve service delivery.
Ordnance Survey analysed office catchments using OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network and other OS datasets, identified inefficient travel (for example staff from Ely visiting Wisbech and vice versa), and helped redraw catchments and routes. The changes saved around 10,524 km of mileage in one month across two services, delivered up to £35k annual mileage savings and up to £39k in staff-time savings (estimated), for total savings of up to £74k, while speeding up school responses, increasing time social workers spend with families and supporting the council’s green agenda.
