Broxtowe Borough Council - Customer Case Study

Broxtowe Borough Council faced the task of identifying, classifying and evaluating local sites for housing growth and producing a defensible Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) and Local Plan that could withstand public examination. To achieve accurate, up‑to‑date mapping and easier public access they worked with Ordnance Survey using OS datasets such as OS MasterMap Topography Layer, OS VectorMap and other OS products.

Using GIS with Ordnance Survey mapping, Broxtowe overlaid its SHLAA database (planning applications, developer submissions and public canvassing) onto OS MasterMap and published interactive site maps online. The Ordnance Survey solution reduced analysis time from months to hours (saving around six months of officer time), helped Broxtowe become a pilot authority for a brownfield register, improved public transparency and enabled the council to progress confidently to plan examination.
