A Ordnance Survey Case Study
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) needed to rapidly shrink a 5 million m2 estate and cut a £1.8bn annual bill by reducing premises from about 200 to 70 or fewer. To map, analyse and communicate its estate strategy BIS used Ordnance Survey data via the Public Services Mapping Agreement (PSMA), including OS VectorMap® Local, to understand geographic footprints and identify consolidation opportunities.
Ordnance Survey supplied the mapping data and tools that let BIS pinpoint high‑concentration areas, release around 2 million m2 of space, and prioritise service locations while keeping offices accessible. Using the PSMA data BIS aimed to save £100 million by 2014–15, reduce average office space per person from 13.2 m2 to 10 m2, and achieve projected annual savings of up to £830 million—demonstrating clear, measurable impact from Ordnance Survey’s solution.
