Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council - Customer Case Study

Basingstoke Borough Council faced widespread river and groundwater flooding during February 2014 and needed a way to coordinate emergency response, identify hotspots and share live data with partners. They worked with Ordnance Survey, using OS MasterMap Topography Layer together with the council’s Local Land and Property Gazetteer (LLPG) and other raster mapping products to visualise locations and overlay partner datasets.

Ordnance Survey’s mapping was integrated with data from Hampshire Fire and Rescue, police, county council, Environment Agency and others so control-room staff could monitor and update the situation in real time and task resources precisely. The Ordnance Survey-enabled solution helped identify 86 homes for evacuation, support distribution of 12,000 sandbags and the removal of 41 million litres of water, while improving joint access to common information and coordinated emergency response.
