VMS Providing Safety And Regulatory Compliance For Mexican Fishing Vessels

Astrum Satelital faced the challenge of helping Mexico’s regulator (CONAPESCA) comply with international and national rules requiring satellite tracking for motorized fishing vessels — more than 2,000 boats across the Pacific, Gulf and Caribbean — and needed a centralized, tamper‑proof VMS that could provide precise location, geofence enforcement, emergency alerts and data for enforcement and research. Astrum Satelital worked with vendor ORBCOMM and incorporated ORBCOMM’s IDP-690 satellite tracking terminal into its solution to meet these requirements.

ORBCOMM’s IDP-690, integrated into Astrum’s control‑center VMS, delivers hourly position, speed and course reports, on‑demand polling, connection/disconnection alerts, panic/alarms and geofence notifications. The combined solution gave CONAPESCA exact routes and fishing zones, enabled real‑time detection of illegal activity, reduced work redundancy, generated substantial operational savings, improved targeting of financial support to active vessels and enhanced rescue and scientific research capabilities.
