Case Study: Holland Container Innovations achieves reduced transport costs and improved traceability with ORBCOMM telematics

A ORBCOMM Case Study

Traceable, foldable containers stack up the benefits for reduced transport costs and lower environmental impact

Holland Container Innovations (HCI) developed the 4FOLD foldable ISO container to cut the huge cost and environmental impact of repositioning empty containers, but needed reliable global traceability to ensure four units travel, fold and return together. To meet that challenge HCI selected ORBCOMM’s telematics solution—primarily the GT 1100 tracker with solar power and integration into ORBCOMM’s CargoWatch® portal—to monitor location and folded/erect status across ports, depots and landside networks.

ORBCOMM fitted GT 1100 units into the containers’ top side rails with a magnetic switch to detect fold state and used cellular/dual-mode communications and CargoWatch for real-time visibility. The solution delivered the landside traceability HCI required, improving asset turns and validating the 4FOLD economics in pilots—with reported cost savings up to 32% for Seatrade and up to 20% for APL on selected trades—helping HCI scale production and reduce empty repositioning.
