Teck and Do Better use ORBCOMM technology to improve safety for mining personnel in Chile

Do Better, a Santiago-based supply chain consultancy, was engaged to help Teck secure its personnel and equipment on the six-hour, 240‑km route to the Quebrada Blanca mine in northern Chile. Facing steep gradients, tight curves and extreme altitude-related conditions, Teck needed continuous fleet safety monitoring, so Do Better deployed an ORBCOMM-based solution using onboard telematics, in‑cab fleet safety devices and cloud applications.

Using ORBCOMM technology, Do Better implemented geofences, section-specific speed limits, in‑cab alerts, an operations control center with escalation matrices, and a preventative maintenance program for devices. The rollout reduced speeding alerts by 85%, completely eliminated harsh- and sudden‑braking events, maintained 100% device operability, delivered first‑class traffic safety standards, and led Teck to scale ORBCOMM fleet tracking to 400 vehicles over the next four years.
