State-of-the-art trailer tracking helps refrigerated carrier keep its cool

C.R. England, one of North America’s largest temperature-controlled carriers with more than 5,000 refrigerated trailers and 1,600 intermodal reefer containers, faced a visibility gap: its prior system only transmitted data when trailers were attached to tractors, leaving units untraceable in yards or at customer sites and exposing temperature-sensitive cargo to theft, damage and poor trailer utilization. To address this, C.R. England engaged ORBCOMM for an advanced end-to-end reefer tracking and monitoring (cold chain telematics) solution.

ORBCOMM deployed rugged two-way telematics with cellular and satellite connectivity integrated into C.R. England’s management portal, enabling continuous trailer tracking, remote temperature control, automated alerts for mechanical and decision errors, and analytics/reporting. The results were rapid and measurable: trailers idle over 30 days fell by 53% in year one, temperature-related claims dropped 44% (saving hundreds of thousands of dollars), thefts were significantly reduced (12 trailers had been stolen the prior year), and the carrier achieved staffing, detention-invoicing, fuel-efficiency and maintenance-scheduling improvements—delivering clear ROI from ORBCOMM’s solution.
