Chief Express, LLC, a Seagrove, North Carolina carrier operating 75 trucks and 300 trailers and moving more than 35,000 loads a year, was struggling with a cumbersome, unreliable telematics system that frustrated drivers, produced inaccurate trailer-pool records, and left drivers and dispatchers without quick Hours of Service (HOS) visibility. To solve these problems, Chief Express turned to ORBCOMM and implemented ORBCOMM’s truck management solution — including a FMCSA‑certified ELD — plus ORBCOMM trailer tracking, fully integrated with McLeod Software’s LoadMaster®.
ORBCOMM deployed in‑cab ELDs and trailer trackers and fed HOS, ECM and GPS data into LoadMaster, adding geofencing, Driver Feasibility, an HOS Advisor and a customizable ORBCOMM portal. The result: near‑instant device response (about 99% of transmissions), reduced driver downtime and fewer dispatcher calls, accurate trailer-location data for correct billing and rapid recovery of stolen or unauthorized trailers, and actionable engine data to cut idling and target driver coaching — all driving measurable operational efficiency gains for Chief Express.
