A ORBCOMM Case Study
Los Pelambres, a large copper mine in Salamanca, Chile, faced costly downtime after adopting a fast refueling system: factory fuel sensors ruptured under pressure, drivers were forced to guess tank levels, tanks sometimes ran dry (adding five hours for air removal), and refueling queues and extra stops eroded the expected productivity gains. To address this, the mine selected a solution that combined Tarco’s PCR 1000 remote fuel monitoring system with ORBCOMM hardware and connectivity, notably the ORBCOMM IDP-782 dual‑mode terminal.
Tarco’s PCR 1000, using ORBCOMM’s IDP-782 to transmit ruggedized fuel-sensor and vehicle telematics data over cellular or satellite, gave the control center real-time tank levels, locations and threshold alarms to optimize refueling. The deployment increased fuel per stop by 1,200 liters, cut monthly stops per truck by 10, recovered about four work hours per period and enabled an extra 4,000 tons of copper to be processed — improving asset utilization, reducing service costs and boosting Los Pelambres’ bottom line, with ORBCOMM providing the critical dual-mode connectivity.
