Harvest monitoring to improve productivity

Wiagro faced a customer challenge to maximize soybean value by storing grain in silo bags until market prices were optimal, while ensuring quality and security in a location with no cellular service. The customer needed continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity and CO2 to protect crop quality and location/movement alerts to detect theft — so Wiagro turned to ORBCOMM for satellite IoT connectivity and terminal hardware.

Wiagro implemented a solution combining an ORBCOMM satellite terminal with temperature, humidity and CO2 sensors, a solar power supply, a microcontroller and backend software; ORBCOMM’s field application engineers developed terminal software and supported integration. The system reports environmental data once per day (with immediate alarms for error conditions or detected movement), minimized data transmission to reduce satellite connection costs, sped time to market and lowered development overhead — enabling the customer to economically monitor harvest condition remotely and avoid expensive site visits.
