ORBCOMM and PT SOG INDONESIA help ensure sustainable Indonesian commercial fishing with satellite IoT vessel monitoring system

PT SOG Indonesia, a long-standing provider of vessel monitoring solutions, faced the dual challenge of helping fleets comply with new, stricter KKP regulations and combating widespread illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing across Indonesia’s vast waters. To reach thousands of small vessels that often lack power, communications gear and technical know‑how, PT SOG partnered with ORBCOMM to leverage satellite IoT connectivity and a tailored vessel monitoring system (VMS).

PT SOG Indonesia deployed a satellite-enabled VMS using ORBCOMM satellite services and terminals to provide wide-area coverage, hourly tracking, and shore-based monitoring; together they have delivered over 7,000 transmitters and support around 2,300 active vessels since 2007. The ORBCOMM-backed solution boosted regulatory compliance, enabled route optimization to reduce fuel and operating costs, improved safety and search-and-rescue, supported quota and protected-area management with near real-time data, and strengthened sustainable fisheries management nationwide.
