Visitors to Pompeii park dig Oracle Cloud-based app

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site near Naples that typically attracts about 3 million visitors a year, needed a solution to safely reopen after Italy’s COVID-19 lockdown. The park faced the challenge of monitoring visitor movement across its 44 km² and 500 accessible buildings to ensure social distancing and prevent crowding.

Working with Oracle Consulting, Pompeii launched the cloud-native MyPompeii mobile app on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Autonomous Database in just six weeks; the solution leverages Oracle Spatial Analytics, Blockchain, Functions, API Gateway and Kubernetes to deliver a real-time heat map and visitor services. Since its July 2020 release the app has been downloaded over 20,000 times, helping staff redirect guests to reduce congestion, support safe reopening, and improve the visitor experience.
