University of Bristol Makes COVID Breakthrough With Oracle

The University of Bristol needed a faster way to process terabytes of cryo-electron microscopy data as its researchers pivoted to studying SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. To meet that challenge, the university worked with Oracle and used Oracle Cloud Infrastructure high-performance computing through Oracle for Research.

Oracle provided a one-year grant with free access to high-performance cloud computing, enabling the team to cut intensive computation from weeks to just days and hours. With Oracle, researchers built a high-resolution 3D VR simulation of the virus, identified a druggable pocket for antiviral treatment, and helped launch Halo Therapeutics; the company’s first nasal spray product is now preparing for clinical trials.
