University Hospitals Leuven Provide Electronic Health Records in Real Time While Ensuring Threefold Scalability and Security with Next-Generation Infrastructure

University Hospitals Leuven (UZ Leuven) is one of Europe’s largest healthcare providers, combining research, training and multidisciplinary patient care. The hospital developed its own electronic clinical workstation (KWS) used locally and shared via the nexuz health cloud with 16 partner hospitals; the environment needed to support 6,000 concurrent connections, ~80 million transactions per day on a 5 TB database, and accommodate an anticipated 50% growth in user transactions while maintaining real‑time access, availability and security.

UZ Leuven deployed Oracle SPARC M7 servers with Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle VM Server for SPARC, achieving a threefold performance increase over its SPARC T5 systems and linear scaling to 420 Sybase engines (compared with 48 on an Intel E7 platform). The new infrastructure delivered better response times, data availability and information security, enabling scalable, secure real‑time electronic health record sharing across the hospital network.
