A Oracle Case Study
University of Twente, a research-intensive Dutch university, faced aging database infrastructure that caused frequent, unplanned downtime and slow transaction processing—disrupting course enrollment, scheduling, tuition payments, HR and financial systems, and other student and administrative services. The IT team needed to consolidate servers, improve stability and performance for more than 50 Oracle databases, and reduce the time and effort spent on administering, patching, and maintaining the environment.
The university replaced 15 servers and central storage with five Oracle Database Appliance units and deployed Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, cutting installation time (appliances up in under an hour; migrations 5–30 minutes per database) and eliminating unplanned production downtime for more than a year. Transaction throughput tripled from 28,000 to 85,000 transactions per minute, stability of core E-Business Suite and other applications improved, and IT administration and monitoring became faster and simpler—delivering a noticeably better experience for students and staff.
