Tridium Gets to Market Faster with Next-Generation Framework for 10 Million Embedded Devices

Tridium, an independent Honeywell business and creator of the Niagara Framework for integrating diverse systems and devices, needed a higher-performance, portable Java platform to support next-generation embedded systems across markets such as data centers, industrial automation, and smart cities. The company’s challenges were to deploy a reliable Java foundation for faster processors with more memory, maintain portability from edge to cloud, reduce development costs, and accelerate time to market for new embedded-device features.

Tridium moved from IBM’s J2ME to Oracle Java SE Embedded, working with Oracle to build a custom configuration and completing the transition in about 16 months. The change delivered tangible gains: Java HotSpot VM boosted performance by ~15%, richer Java SE APIs sped development, and Tridium was able to quickly deliver new features to 400,000 Niagara instances controlling more than 10 million devices—improving portability, integration with Oracle Database, developer productivity, and overall profitability.
