A Oracle Case Study
Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a nonprofit research organization that accelerates genomic discoveries to help patients with cancer, neurological disorders, and diabetes. Facing a 100% annual increase in gene-sequencing data over five years, TGen struggled to back up and scale its growing datasets and needed a cost-effective archive that still allowed researchers timely access to large genomic files.
TGen deployed an Oracle tiered-storage solution—Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance for short-term access, Oracle Hierarchical Storage Manager and StorageTek QFS for policy-based tiering, StorageTek SL3000 tape library with T10000C drives for long-term storage, Oracle Key Manager for encryption, and StorageTek Tape Analytics—implemented with Oracle Advanced Customer Support. The system gives 90-day high-performance disk access with automatic tape archiving thereafter, supports petabyte-scale growth, improves data integrity and manageability, cuts storage costs from roughly $800–$900 per TB to $50–$60 per TB, reduces energy costs, and frees budget for research.
