The New School Gains Cost-of-Education Modeling and Ensures Educational-Program Effectiveness by Using Performance Management Technology

The New School is a progressive university in New York City enrolling about 10,000 degree-seeking students across more than 130 undergraduate and graduate programs. Facing rising educational costs, the university needed accurate cost-of-education analysis to make fiscally responsible decisions, but its prior Microsoft Access/Excel model—containing over 2 million calculations—was fragile, time-consuming to update, and error prone, leaving staff spending more time verifying data than analyzing results.

To address this, The New School implemented Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management with support from partner Intelligent Software Solutions. The solution delivers stable, multidimensional cost and revenue modeling, faster scenario analysis, and granular insight into program, degree, and course-level profitability—enabling informed pricing, program planning, accreditation-compliant cost disclosure, and quicker responses to stakeholders. The team has produced fiscal-year data back to 2008–2011, is completing 2012 comparisons, and plans a full rollout for ongoing year-over-year analysis.
