Stedin Monitors Utilities Network Maintenance and Ensures Employee Safety with Mobile Application, Built Within Months

Stedin Diensten B.V., a major Netherlands utilities distributor serving more than 2 million electricity and gas customers, needed a faster, safer way to monitor its network and coordinate field crews. Key challenges included 24/7 outage detection and rapid technician allocation, tracking time spent by engineers inside high‑risk stations for safety, preventing unauthorized access to power units, minimizing customer disruption during maintenance, and cutting control‑center payroll and telecommunications costs with minimal new investment.

Working with Oracle and partner Yenlo, Stedin built a cross‑platform mobile application using Oracle Database, Oracle Application Express, Oracle Spatial and Graph, MapViewer and jQuery in just four months. The app enables real‑time location and time tracking, door and unit status monitoring, and fast dispatch to outages; it eliminated more than 100,000 annual SMS/phone requests, removed two full‑time call‑logging roles, improved maintenance planning and reporting, and delivered the solution far faster and cheaper than competing proposals.
