SMUD enhances mobile engagement with assist from Opower

SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utility District) wanted a native mobile app that went beyond routine bill notifications and outage alerts to deliver real value and strengthen customer relationships. The challenge was to provide visually compelling usage and cost insights and a seamless authentication experience between SMUD’s web and mobile properties to drive adoption.

SMUD implemented Oracle Utilities Opower Digital Self Service (DSS-EM), adding the Data Browser widget for usage, cost, and weather-impact insights and using OAuth for smooth cross-platform authentication. The app is now one of the highest-rated utility apps (4.8/5), with roughly 15% of customers engaging and a 21% increase in downloads since August 2020 after the enhanced features and marketing.
