SMECO optimizes grid management with distribution analytics

SMECO, one of the largest electric cooperatives in the United States, wanted to improve sustainability, customer energy efficiency, and grid reliability as it rolled out advanced metering infrastructure across more than 170,000 accounts. To support these goals, SMECO turned to Oracle Utilities, including Oracle Utilities Opower Energy Efficiency and Oracle Utilities Analytics Insights, to better use smart meter data for both customer programs and maintenance planning.

Oracle helped SMECO analyze appliance-level energy use, target customers with personalized offers and rebates, and shift maintenance from reactive to preventative. The results were strong: SMECO doubled the pace of smart thermostat adoption, increased participation in its home energy improvement program five-fold, and identified more than 50 overloaded transformers in the first few months, helping reduce unplanned outages and improve outage management accuracy.
