SID Drives Modernization of Saxony’s Public Services with Oracle

Staatsbetrieb Sächsische Informatik Dienste (SID) is Saxony’s central IT service provider, responsible for developing, operating and securing the state’s administrative IT systems. Facing aging IA‑64 database hardware and rising costs, SID needed to modernize and consolidate high‑volume databases—starting with the FOMISAX subsidies system—to boost compute and storage capacity, improve availability for municipalities and citizens, simplify administration, and capture migration know‑how for future projects.

SID implemented Oracle Exadata with Oracle Business Intelligence Suite, Oracle Active Data Guard and Oracle support services in a phased rollout (2014–2016), plus training from Oracle University and partner Robotron. The upgrade consolidated databases onto a central platform, delivering ~30% faster OLTP, up to 60% faster batch processing and backups, and ~50% faster data‑warehouse queries, while reducing downtime, lowering license and maintenance costs by retiring legacy systems, improving resource allocation and availability, and building in scalable, sustainable operations for Saxony’s public services.
