Seattle Sounders FC gets data science in the game with Oracle

Seattle Sounders FC, a Major League Soccer club, needed to modernize its analytics to turn massive player-tracking and performance datasets into real-time, actionable insights for coaches and scouts. Their aging on‑premises infrastructure struggled with the scale—queries could take days—so the analytics team sought a faster, scalable platform to support tactical analysis, player health, scouting, and live-game decisioning.

The club moved its data into Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and adopted OCI Data Science and Oracle Analytics Cloud, working with Oracle data scientists to build a proof-of-concept ML model to detect line‑breaking passes. The model was used heavily in the 2020 playoffs, the team migrated all performance and sports-science data to ADW, and new projects (pattern detection, space-creation analytics, goal-threat probabilities, and automated video tagging) are underway—while the club benefits from faster insights, reduced DBA overhead, and pay-as-you-go cloud cost flexibility.
