RWE Deutschland Gains Ability to Process 2.3 Billion Smart Meter Readouts in Under 24 Hours with Engineered Systems

RWE Deutschland AG, a major German energy company based in Essen serving millions of electricity and gas customers, needed a highly available, scalable platform to collect, store, and analyze rapidly growing smart‑meter data. The company’s central data hub (Robotron’s robotron*esmart) had to run 24/7, support real‑time measurement and analytics, handle exponential data growth from large smart‑meter rollouts, and manage data cost‑effectively across its lifecycle.

RWE deployed Oracle engineered systems—an Oracle Exadata Database Machine (Eighth Rack) in a high‑availability configuration together with the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance and Robotron’s energy market suite. The solution enabled on‑demand scalability, automated storage tuning and lifecycle management, and demonstrated processing of 2.3 billion smart‑meter readouts in 22 hours (importing from more than 12 million meters). As a result, RWE can meet peak loads, provide timely analyses (load flows and profiles), reduce backup/archive costs, and confidently scale for future smart‑meter rollouts.
