A Oracle Case Study

Preview of the Qatar International Islamic Bank Case Study

QIIB Reduces Application Response Time 10x on Average, Saves US$1.5 Million per Year in Database Licensing Costs

QIIB is a Doha-based Islamic bank serving retail, corporate and investment customers across 18 branches, 86 ATMs and a 24/7 contact center. Facing intense competition and rising operating costs, the bank needed a modern, highly available IT platform to consolidate multiple applications, cut database licensing and infrastructure costs, and dramatically reduce application response times to improve customer and employee experience.

QIIB deployed Oracle Exadata (production and DR racks) with Oracle RAC and Active Data Guard, plus Smart Scan, partitioning and Hybrid Columnar Compression, consolidating workloads onto 48 processors (down from 288). The result: average database response times dropped 10x (from ~100 ms to ~10 ms, with some reads <1 ms), typical reports shrank from hours to minutes, accounts reconciliation sped up 60%, 20 legacy servers were retired, and the bank saved about US$1.5 million per year in licensing while eliminating downtime and freeing IT staff for strategic work.
