Paragon Data Enables Medium-Sized Retail Organization to Slash Database Licensing Costs without Losing Application Performance

Paragon Data GmbH, an Oracle Platinum Partner that operates the data center for Deutsche Buch Handels (DBH) and supports more than 450 bookstores across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, was asked to help a medium‑sized retail customer sharply reduce database licensing costs without degrading store and online operations. The challenge was to deliver a flexible, budget‑friendly database operating model that preserved high availability and stringent German data‑protection requirements across on‑premises, private, and public cloud environments.

Paragon deployed Oracle Database Cloud Service alongside Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance, Active Data Guard, and GoldenGate to provide subscription‑based cloud access, encrypted data protection, and a near‑zero‑downtime migration of 6 TB. The solution maintained ERP and e‑commerce performance, preserved availability equivalent to the prior RAC on‑premises setup, allowed short‑notice contract cancellation, and delivered enterprise features and redundancy at a total cost of ownership roughly three times lower than a traditional on‑premises approach.
