Preview of the NTT Plala Case Study

NTT Plala Cuts Annual Data Center Operating Costs by US$850,000, Boosts IT Productivity by 80%, and Enhances Service Quality with Virtualized Platform

NTT Plala Inc., a Tokyo-based member of NTT Communications and operator of Hikari‑TV and Plala Internet, serves more than 6 million TV and Internet subscribers. Facing rapid growth in video streaming and ISP demand, the company needed a high-performing, reliable virtualized platform to cut data center operating costs, simplify system management, and speed application development and service rollouts to stay competitive.

NTT Plala consolidated 180+ applications and web servers onto Oracle SPARC T4‑1 and T5‑2 systems running Oracle Solaris and Oracle VM Server for SPARC, with ZFS for storage. The virtualized platform reduced annual data center costs by about US$850,000, cut IT staff workload by 80%, doubled database performance, shortened server procurement from eight weeks to under one week, halved licensing costs through flexible CPU allocation, and increased agility for faster service launches.
