NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s largest mobile carrier with over 66 million customers, needed a high-performance, scalable billing platform (MoBills) to support its “+d” initiative—combining customer, membership, and payment systems with partners to deliver new services. The company faced a challenge to calculate mobile billings much faster, improve service availability and quality, reduce maintenance workload, and support significant data growth and rapid service rollout over the next decade.
DOCOMO consolidated 350 legacy database servers and storage systems onto 30 Oracle Exadata Database Machines, validated with Oracle Real Application Testing and implemented with NEC support. The engineered system cut billing processing time by more than 10x, halved maintenance costs, reduced installation costs by 25%, enabled real-time charge calculations for a billion calls daily and rapid processing of 8 million orders, accelerated new-service launches, simplified system management, and reduced data-center space and energy use.
