Case Study: NHS Business Services Authority achieves £1 billion in potential savings with Oracle Analytics

A Oracle Case Study

Preview of the NHS Business Services Authority Case Study

NHS Business Services Authority Gains Better Insight into Data, Identifies circa GBP100 Million (US$156 Million) in Potential Savings in Just Three Months

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA), an arm’s‑length Department of Health body that manages NHS pensions, dental and pharmacy payments and the EHIC, was tasked with finding cost reductions and eliminating waste. Its data was dispersed across multiple systems and lacked the centralized, scalable analytics needed to detect fraud, reduce errors and improve patient outcomes.

NHSBSA deployed an end‑to‑end Oracle stack (in‑database machine learning/Advanced Analytics, Exadata, Exalytics, Endeca and OBIEE) and created the Data Analytics Learning Laboratory (DALL) to run transaction‑level and anomaly detection analytics on billions of records. The work enabled EHIC fraud prevention, cut dental non‑matching from 15% to 5%, surfaced ~£100m in potential savings within three months and has identified up to £1bn in ongoing annual savings while improving care insights and internal productivity.
