Nara Institute of Science and Technology Improves Advanced-Research Platform While Lowering Cost and Simplifying Server Management

Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), a leading Japanese graduate research university, needed to centralize its campuswide Hadoop-based storage and deliver a high-performance, secure, and flexible cloud-style processing platform to support cross-disciplinary research while lowering costs and simplifying server management.

NAIST implemented Oracle Big Data Appliance, Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3‑2 and a 200‑server virtualized Sun platform tied together with Oracle Fabric Interconnect and an InfiniBand switch. The solution increased storage to 4 PB, provided a 40 Gbps, highly available network for over 4,000 clients, simplified connectivity with single‑cable management, reduced capital and operational costs, and seamlessly integrated with existing Sun infrastructure.
