Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Streamlines Authorized Access to Applications While Ensuring Security

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world’s largest laser facility, needed to replace a homegrown identity-management system to ensure high availability for more than 45 applications, protect mission-critical documents and drawings, and enable secure internal collaboration for over 7,000 users including engineers, operations staff, and visiting physicists.

NIF implemented Oracle Identity Management (with Oracle Access Manager, Virtual Directory, and Internet Directory) and consolidated into a single identity environment. The solution eliminated duplicate accounts, integrated with Oracle Active Directory, ensured compliance with federal authentication policies, improved data security and user integrity, and enabled immediate identification of unauthorized users; the deployment was completed during a nine-month upgrade and NIF plans further upgrades to 11g Release 2.
