A Oracle Case Study
King Hamad University Hospital, Bahrain’s national secondary and tertiary referral center with more than 40 specialties, faced a rigid legacy hospital information environment that made functional changes slow, costly, and difficult to integrate. After failed attempts with local systems built on Adobe Flash and Oracle Forms and consideration of buying a commercial system, the hospital needed a modern, flexible platform to consolidate scheduling, EMRs, lab, pharmacy, oncology workflows and other services into one reliable system.
The hospital chose Oracle APEX (included with Oracle Database) to build HOPE, a single application suite of 40+ modules. Development velocity increased fivefold, enabling rapid, incremental delivery; the hospital saved an estimated 80% (over $27M) across a 10‑year budget window; and the app now serves ~5,000 users with 4–5 million hits per day on modest hardware. Results include paperless, integrated clinical and financial workflows, fewer errors (notably in chemotherapy protocols), expanded in‑house development capacity, faster pandemic responses and reinvestment of savings into national integrations and automation projects.
