Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Ensures Round-the-Clock Library Service Availability with a Robust Database Cluster System

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) — one of Germany’s leading engineering research institutions whose Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) provides central IT services — needed a robust database environment to support a 24/7 library with more than 2 million publications for about 25,000 students and 8,000 researchers. KIT also required reliable online student registration and class management and secure, controlled access for external users and partner institutions supporting continuing-education programs.

KIT implemented Oracle Database with Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Connection Manager to deliver high availability, scalable performance, and rule-based access control. The solution kept library services uninterrupted, allowed capacity to be increased by adding RAC nodes for peak registration loads, hardened external connectivity security, and enabled customized database support for research projects and departmental needs.
