John Lewis Partnership Transforms Personnel Services for 85,000 Employees by Using a Self-Service Portal

John Lewis Partnership, a UK retailer with 85,000 employee‑partners across John Lewis stores, Waitrose supermarkets and online channels, needed to centralize and modernize personnel services. The challenge was to replace manual, time‑intensive HR processes with a shared‑service, self‑service platform that would let staff and line managers access payroll, leave and performance information from the office, stores or home while supporting rapid organizational growth.

John Lewis implemented Oracle WebCenter Portal integrated with WebCenter Content, Oracle E‑Business Suite and OBIEE, delivering a single‑login, 24/7 HR portal. The rollout drove 60% of HR transactions to self‑service, cut time and costs from phone and email requests, automated notifications and approvals, improved manager visibility and planning, trained all 85,000 staff for rapid adoption, and created a scalable platform for further integrations and future services.
