A Oracle Case Study
ICA Gruppen AB, a Swedish retail group with about 8,000 employees and US$10 billion in annual revenue, needed to modernize 350 databases running on more than 70 diverse, underutilized legacy servers. The team faced high maintenance costs, long service-delivery times caused by low automation and nonstandard platforms, complex multi-team troubleshooting, and the need to establish baselines for outsourcing, speed up time-to-market, and reduce licensing and operating expenses.
ICA standardized on Oracle Private Cloud Appliance as its Oracle-as-a-Service platform, consolidating infrastructure and automating provisioning. The change delivered an 85% lower total cost of ownership versus commodity x86 alternatives, more than US$15 million in reduced acquisition/license/support/maintenance costs over three years, and up to US$2.5 million in operational expense savings. Provisioning times fell from weeks to under an hour, services were standardized into a single catalog, service orders dropped from 12 to 1, and the platform scaled easily by adding compute nodes.
