GIA Processes Record Queries 30x Faster, Improves Data Consolidation, and Boosts Stone Graders’ Productivity

GIA (Gemological Institute of America), a global authority in diamond and gemstone grading with labs in 14 countries and more than 2,000 employees, needed a high‑performance, scalable infrastructure to support its gem‑rating application across Carlsbad, Mumbai and other sites. The institute faced slow record queries, risky downtime that could halt grading operations, growing inventory volumes, and rising IT complexity and management costs.

Working with Tata Consultancy Services, GIA deployed Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, which cut record‑query times from about 30 minutes to one minute (30x faster), enabled inventory checks every 15–30 minutes instead of taking 6–8 hours, and consolidated servers to simplify management. Backups fell from six hours to 30 minutes and database statistics collection from eight hours to 10 minutes, unplanned downtime and Java run‑time errors were eliminated, throughput and customer visibility improved, and overall IT complexity and costs were significantly reduced.
