Case Study: Endesa achieves near‑zero downtime database consolidation supporting 150M daily transactions with Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Database

A Oracle Case Study

Preview of the Endesa Case Study

Endesa’s Databases That Support 150 Million Transactions Daily are Upgraded and Consolidated with Minimal Downtime

Endesa, a leading electric utility in Spain serving more than 25 million customers and processing 100–150 million back‑office transactions daily, needed to migrate and consolidate two Oracle databases as part of a data‑center transformation. The key challenges were minimizing downtime to avoid missed rate‑submission deadlines and fines, ensuring accurate replication of heterogeneous source data, and preserving performance for real‑time price‑setting and dispatch operations.

Using Oracle Database 11g with Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Active Data Guard and Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services, Endesa exported, replicated and merged a 150‑GB operational database with a 900‑GB historical rates database with under 30 minutes of downtime. The migration improved log management (date/month partitioning), verified replication, eliminated manual re‑entry, maintained consistent performance for critical rate‑setting processes, and avoided regulatory penalties while streamlining operations.
