EHS implements empirical antibiotics program with Oracle Health EHR

Emirates Health Services (EHS), a leading healthcare operator in the northern United Arab Emirates, needed to improve safe medication practices for hospitalized patients by better managing empirical antibiotic use. Its baseline empirical antibiotic prescription duration averaged 4.4 days, creating an opportunity to reduce unnecessary consumption and costs with Oracle Health EHR, branded as Wareed.

Oracle implemented a guided, protocol-embedded program in the Oracle EHR with rules and alerts that ensured empirical antibiotics were reviewed at 72 hours. The result was more than a 5X reduction in empirical antibiotic consumption, a drop in average prescription length to 2.8 days, and AED 13,171,322 in annual antibiotic cost reductions.
