Cummins Centralizes Key Customs and Compliance Processes to Minimize Supply Chain Risk

Cummins, a global manufacturer of diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies with more than 7,200 dealer locations in over 190 countries, faced complex customs and compliance challenges from its extensive international footprint. The company needed a single source of truth for product classification, consolidation of regional customs efforts into a central team, standardized data entry for trading partners, and stronger screening tools to reduce the risk of non‑compliance, inaccurate duties/taxes, and shipment delays.

Cummins worked with KPIT to implement Oracle Global Trade Management in a phased rollout, creating a central customs team and governance model. The solution standardized product classifications, automated harmonized system code assignment for about 70% of new items in phase one, improved trading‑partner data and documentation for shipping/receiving, and added restricted‑party screening across 13–15 countries. Results included fewer customs delays, greater visibility into duties and compliance issues before shipping, and a repeatable global trade compliance model with six pilot sites operational in 11 months.
