City of Nuremberg Optimizes Operation, Maintenance, and Security of Heterogeneous IT Landscape with Operating System Upgrade

The City of Nuremberg, a major Bavarian municipality serving about 500,000 residents, needed to add an SAP business warehouse and support numerous specialty applications without replacing its long-standing Oracle Solaris–based platform. The key challenges were minimizing deployment and maintenance effort, preserving the proven Solaris environment, and ensuring high performance and continuous availability for critical services such as traffic surveillance, resident registration, and motor‑vehicle licensing.

Nuremberg upgraded to Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.0, using Solaris Zones, Oracle Solaris Volume Manager, and Service Management Facility to speed configuration and simplify updates. Two cluster nodes in geographically separate data centers, host-based mirroring, automatic failover, and rolling upgrades delivered near‑zero downtime and 24/7 availability, while zone-based access improved security and reduced system complexity. The project met budget and schedule with support from Computacenter and Oracle, enabling faster time to production and reliable integration of SAP and specialty applications.
