A Oracle Case Study
Chosun Ilbo, Korea’s leading newspaper publisher with a popular online arm (Digital Chosun Ilbo) and 1,200 branch offices, faced severe performance and capacity problems from aging Oracle database servers. With CPU peaking at 100%, limited storage, and regular 11-hour service suspensions to run daily billing and batch jobs, the company experienced slow customer responses, frustrated staff, and constraints on launching new services.
To fix this, Chosun Ilbo consolidated eight databases onto Oracle Exadata and used Oracle GoldenGate for seamless, real-time migration and change-data capture. The upgrade cut peak CPU usage by 70% (to ~30%), reduced daily billing time from 11 hours to about 1 hour (10x faster), eliminated long downtimes, shortened CDC/loading to under 2 hours, increased storage via compression, strengthened data security, lowered encryption costs, and improved online stability, employee productivity, and readiness for future growth.
