China Unicom Yunnan Branch, the regional arm of national telecom China Unicom, faced rapidly growing mobile internet usage that outstripped its legacy database servers, creating scalability, availability, and customer-service challenges for billing, reporting, and market analysis.

The branch deployed Oracle SPARC T5-8 and T5-4 servers with Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle VM Server for SPARC to build a private cloud. Built-in virtualization allowed consolidation of servers by two-thirds, reduced data-center energy use by 39%, lowered total cost of ownership, accelerated business-support processing and new-app deployment, and improved disaster recovery, system availability, and customer response times.
