Boston Medical Center Expects to Cut Costs for Data Warehouse Storage and Management While Improving Performance by up to 74%

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a 496‑bed academic medical center and the primary teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine, and the largest safety‑net hospital and trauma provider in New England. Faced with rapidly growing data‑warehouse storage needs, an aging hardware stack and a desire for better performance, scalability and lower total cost of ownership, BMC sought a streamlined infrastructure that would reduce management complexity and support deeper insight into care outcomes and operations.

BMC standardized on Oracle Database Appliance with Oracle Real Application Clusters (with implementation support from partner LCN), deploying it first in development and rolling it into production. The appliance delivered more efficient CPU/RAM usage, up to 74% faster runtime reporting, improved Oracle APEX performance, and allowed consolidation of data management to a single DBA—reducing the need for separate storage and UNIX engineers and cutting expected annual costs for storage, engineering resources and vendor management while providing flexible capacity‑on‑demand.
