A Oracle Case Study
Balfour Beatty used Aconex on the Burbo Bank Extension onshore substation project for an offshore wind farm that deployed 6‑MW turbines commercially for the first time. The team faced rapid staff turnover that required fast onboarding, strict Master Document Register (MDR) rules needing unique IDs and National Grid references, demanding National Grid Technical Specification (NGTS) compliance and technical query processes, plus extensive safety documentation requirements.
Using Aconex Project Controls and Collaboration, the project established a central, instantly searchable repository with configurable templates, version control and on‑demand NGTS documentation, speeding approvals and reducing data loss. Results included a 67% cut in specialist ramp‑up time (from 6–8 weeks to 2), weekly audit time halved, document collation reduced from 3.5 months to 2 weeks, estimated error/rework savings of up to £1.3M (about 1% of project value) and £100,000 annual savings from faster document collation, while meeting regulator requirements and improving asset valuation.
